In Greg Strom’s Podcast, Filling Up (http://themilethatmatters.podbean.com/e/the-mile-that-matters-podcast-2-filling-up/), he references the story of Billy Elliot. First an acclaimed movie, the story found its way to Broadway under the vision of Elton John. The story chronicles the life of a young man in a poverty-stricken coal mining town in Northern England. Billy’s life is forever changed when he stumbles upon a ballet class during his weekly boxing lesson.
What Billy discovers is what we have in us – passion. When Billy’s passion is unleashed and nurtured, those who dismissed his passion see his undiscovered gift. As we journey with Billy we learn that greater the obstacle often greater the opportunity. Through his struggles we can apply those principles he learned to our daily lives. And, though Billy is a dancer, he keeps his feet on the ground. He learns to grow as he perseveres.
As I listened to Greg’s Podcast I was taken back to a pivotal moment in my Personal Development journey. My long term consulting gig was coming to an end and my gut was telling me this is my moment. I knew I was quite good at making bold decisions in a safe zone. Those are not bold decisions. Those are decisions one makes when they are reluctant to move forward.
Each year Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS sponsors the Broadway Flea Market. Times Square and Shubert Alley are packed full of Broadways finest, veterans, and fans. It is a time for the theatrical universe to come together for a charitable cause. The Universe not only encouraged me to go, it challenged me to step up and volunteer. Much like Billy, my passion needed to be unleashed. I volunteered to work one of the booths.
While helping set up the booth, I saw a script for Billy Elliot that one of the actors used. My impulse said “get it.” I did. The first page that I opened was the lyrics:
And the stars looked down
And give us vision to see the light
The stars look down upon our struggle
The stars look down and know the past
The stars look down
And see a future bright at last
The Law of Attraction was in motion. I knew at that moment not only must I fully embrace my Personal Development journey; this community is to be a vital part of that journey. Greg’s podcast was the Universe saying, “See, I told you.”
What is your passion? Is it part of your Personal Development journey?
